Estero is a village in Lee County, Florida. It is home to the Hertz Arena which hosts the home games for the Florida Everblades ECHL ice hockey team. Estero is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The heart of Estero is the spring-fed Estero River that flows to Estero Bay. The earliest settlers in the area were fishing families that lived on Mound Key, a mangrove-ringed island that dominates Estero Bay. By the early 20th century, these families moved upriver to the settlement, which was later known as Estero. Up until 1970, most of the settlement and development remained near the river. Estero is also the location of the utopian community known as the Koreshan Unity, which is preserved as the Koreshan State Historic Site.
