QUICK LINKS
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts. It is one of the most popular procedures in the United States, particularly in beach climates like Naples. Dr. Mark Prysi, a leading plastic surgeon in Southwest Florida, specializes in endoscopic breast augmentation, which minimizes visible scarring while achieving natural-looking results. His advanced techniques, including computer imaging and the use of a “no-touch” Keller Funnel, ensure precise and hygienic implant placement.
Types of Breast Augmentation
There are a few different types of breast augmentation styles, and the best fit can vary for a variety of different reasons including lifestyle, family history or allergies, and overall aesthetic goals.
Saline Implants
Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. These implants are placed through smaller incisions and are filled after they have been placed. This method results in smaller scars that can be easily hidden under the crease of the breast. They can also be a less expensive option, depending on your aesthetic goals.
The disadvantages of saline implants are that they can be more palpable and cause rippling especially in a thin person. Silicone implants are filled with “Cohesive” silicone which has the consistency of Jell-O. Silicone implants tend to feel like natural breast tissue. Fifteen years of FDA research studies clearly show no link between smooth-walled silicone implants and any type of disease.
Silicone Implants
Filled with cohesive silicone gel, these implants mimic natural breast tissue and are less prone to rippling. Silicone implants are more popular for their natural look and feel, as well as being less likely to ripple.
Implant Shapes
Round implants are usually preferred because they provide superior breast fullness and do not risk the malrotation that occurs with shaped implants. In addition, shaped or anatomical implants have much thicker silicone as well as a textured surface; both of which can give a more firm feel to the breast. They are best reserved for breast reconstruction cases and special situations, such as when a patient desires a conservative augmentation with less upper breast fullness.
Implant Profiles
There are three types of implant profiles: moderate (low), moderate plus (medium), and high (high). Dr. Prysi chooses the profile depending on the patient’s desired size and chest width. Dr. Prysi will work with you on determining the best projection for your body type and needs.
Dr. Prysi will need to decide whether your implants will be placed above or beneath your pectoral muscle. Implants placed beneath the chest muscle tend to feel more natural, reduce the chance for capsular contracture (breast firmness), cause less rippling, and reduce the occurrence of post-operative breast sagging.
You and Dr. Prysi will also need to determine where your breast implant incisions will be placed. Implants are placed through incisions either around the areola, beneath the breast crease.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
If you have naturally small breasts, asymmetrical breasts, or breasts that are out of proportion with your body, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation. Ideal candidates are in good health, have realistic expectations, and seek improvement in their breast appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Prysi will evaluate your goals and help determine whether this procedure aligns with your needs.
Before Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Preparation is key to a successful outcome. Dr. Prysi will help you choose the implant type, size, and placement during your consultation. He may also provide imaging to visualize your results and discuss pre-surgery instructions, such as avoiding certain medications and arranging for post-operative care. You will also need to stop smoking or vaping at least 2 weeks prior to your surgery.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure in Naples
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that takes about two hours. Anesthesia is administered so you will not feel any pain during surgery. To begin, Dr. Prysi makes an incision in the pre-determined location. Through the incision, he creates a small pocket for the implants. He positions the implants in their pockets and closes the incisions with sutures. Dr. Prysi recommends a light or fitted support garment for your breasts to help them heal. Breast augmentation in Naples can be performed on its own or may be combined with other procedures such as a breast lift or mommy makeover. There are a few different incisions types for a breast augmentation, and Dr. Prysi will choose the best one for you based on your personal goals and lifestyle.
Periareolar Incision
Centered around the areola, this incision type offers discreet scarring. However, this type of incision can result in damage to milk ducts, so it’s typically recommended only for those who either will not be having any children or do not plan to breastfeed.
Inframammary Incision
This incision option is placed in the breast crease for easier access and minimal visibility. It can be used for either saline or silicone implants, and the size of incision will change depending on the type of implant selected.
After Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
After surgery, it will be very important that you follow the directions Dr. Prysi gives you very closely. By being diligent with your recovery, you can ensure a positive result. Depending on the extent of your surgery, your recovery may be more or less extensive. Recovery times vary, but most patients return to light activities within a week and resume normal routines in four to six weeks. Swelling and sensitivity are normal during the healing process. You may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications. Dr. Prysi will provide detailed instructions for recovery, including follow-up appointments to monitor your healing.
In most cases, you will be instructed to wear a light and fitted compression garment or bra to help with healing and swelling. If your case is more extensive, you may have drains in place to help with the collection of fluid to avoid uncomfortable pressure. Any bandages and drains will be removed for you by Dr. Prysi at a post-operative appointment when you are ready.
What Can Be Combined with Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation can be combined with procedures like a breast lift or mommy makeover for comprehensive results. A breast lift can address sagging and improve overall breast shape, while a mommy makeover targets post-pregnancy body changes, enhancing the abdomen, breasts, and more.
