If you’re a man with excess breast tissue, you’re not alone. Gynecomastia, (a medical term derived from the Greek words for “woman-like breasts”) affects many men. Overdeveloped or enlarged breasts and excess breast tissue can be permanent and uncomfortable, but they can be permanently reduced through male breast reduction surgery in Naples. During your consultation, you and Dr. Prysi will discuss your goals and expectations, and he will assess your current anatomy to determine the cause of your breast enlargement, as male breasts may be formed from excess fatty tissue and/or glandular tissue.
Male breast reduction may be performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure can last from one to three hours depending on the extent of correction. Dr. Prysi performs reductions on enlarged male breasts for many patients in the Southwest Florida area. The cosmetic surgery procedure may require either of the following.
What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a specialized procedure designed to remove excess breast tissue and glandular tissue in men. This surgical procedure restores a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest contour by reducing the size of enlarged breasts (commonly referred to as “man boobs”).
Gynecomastia is often caused by hormonal imbalances, such as increased estrogen levels or decreased testosterone levels. However, it may also be linked to certain medications, anabolic steroids, or underlying medical conditions. In some cases, no known cause (idiopathic gynecomastia) is identified.
Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia
You may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you are a healthy adult man experiencing persistent, enlarged male breasts that do not improve with weight loss or lifestyle changes. Candidates for surgical intervention:
- Are bothered by the appearance of their chest
- Have stable hormone levels
- Are not taking drugs or medications known to cause gynecomastia
- Are at a stable weight and do not smoke
- Are free from underlying conditions such as prostate cancer or breast cancer
Dr. Prysi will review your medical history and perform a physical exam to determine if male breast reduction surgery is the best option for you.
Is Gynecomastia Right for Me?
If your chest appearance negatively affects your self-esteem or quality of life, gynecomastia surgery may be an effective treatment option. Many men seek this procedure after experiencing emotional discomfort related to their breast size or contour. The condition can affect one breast or both, sometimes causing unevenness. Gynecomastia surgery is particularly beneficial for those who have tried to reduce their breast size through exercise without success, want to restore a more masculine chest contour, or are seeking permanent removal of glandular tissue or fat that cannot be addressed through non-surgical methods.
Types of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can involve different types of breast tissue, and understanding these helps guide the most effective treatment approach:
- Glandular Tissue: Glandular breast tissue is often caused by hormonal imbalances, such as increased estrogen levels or decreased testosterone levels, and cannot be removed with diet or exercise. It typically requires surgical excision to reduce breast size and restore a masculine chest contour.
- Fatty Tissue: In some cases, enlarged breasts are primarily due to excess fat rather than glandular tissue. This is sometimes called pseudogynecomastia; fatty tissue can often be effectively treated with liposuction, which removes excess fat deposits and sculpts the chest.
Many patients have a combination of both glandular and fatty tissue, and Dr. Prysi will tailor the male breast reduction surgery to address the specific type and extent of tissue involved for optimal results.
Before Your Gynecomastia Procedure
Prior to surgery, Dr. Prysi will conduct a thorough consultation that includes reviewing your medical history, current medications, and gynecomastia symptoms. To prepare for your gynecomastia surgery, you will need to stop taking certain medications or supplements that increase bleeding risk, avoid smoking and alcohol in the weeks leading up to the procedure, and arrange for assistance during the first few days of your recovery.
During Your Gynecomastia Procedure
During your gynecomastia procedure, which is performed as an outpatient procedure lasting about an hour to a few hours, Dr. Prysi will carefully remove excess tissue, including breast gland tissue and excess fat, to effectively treat enlarged male breasts.
The surgical procedure involves making small incisions to access and remove the excess gland tissue, fat, and sometimes excess skin that contribute to breast growth and an enlarged chest area. Your chest muscles and pectoral muscles will be sculpted to achieve a natural, masculine contour that lasts beyond the initial healing period.
After Your Gynecomastia Procedure
After the surgery, most patients wear a compression vest for approximately six weeks to help reduce swelling and support the newly contoured chest. During the first few weeks of recovery, it is common to experience some tightness, bruising, and mild discomfort. You may shower 24 hours after surgery, but tub baths should be avoided for six weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within about 1 week. Swelling will gradually diminish over time, and the final shape of your chest will continue to improve over the following several months.
What Can Be Combined with Gynecomastia?
For enhanced results, male breast reduction surgery can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures:
Gynecomastia and Liposuction
If your gynecomastia is primarily caused by fatty tissue, Dr. Prysi may recommend liposuction. This procedure removes unwanted localized fat cell deposits from the body, leaving you with a more masculine appearance.
Traditional Surgical Excision
If your gynecomastia is the result of a glandular disorder, liposuction alone is not likely to be adequate. Traditional surgical excision may be a better option. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. Typically, the incision is placed on the edge of the areola (colored area of the nipple) or in the underarm area. Your surgeon will work through these incisions to cut away the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breast.
