What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, clinically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the upper and lower eyelids by addressing excess skin, excess fat, drooping eyelids, and puffiness. Over time, the delicate eyelid skin thins, leading to bags under the eyes. Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed for cosmetic reasons or as reconstructive surgery when excessive skin interferes with side vision, peripheral vision, or daily activities.

“Meeting with Dr Prysi has been very easy. He listens to your questions and explains procedures. He works very well with his team at their office. Dr. Prysi seminars have been very helpful in learning the procedures and good skin care. The staff is very helpful in follow through and letting you know about what to expect. ”

“Dr. Prysi has the best patient care and follow- up His staff if very professional, caring and knowledgable, as well as Dr. Prysi I would recommend and continue to go there for any procedure or maintenance I need. The office is also one of the most pleasant looking I have ever seen.”

“My friend recommended Dr. Prysi to me. She had a procedure done 6 month previously and looked fabulous. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and not at all pushy. I love the results.”

Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Dr. Prysi is extensively experienced in both upper and lower eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift can give you a more youthful and well-rested appearance while also potentially improving your vision. You may be a candidate for eyelid surgery if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Sagging skin that may obscure the natural fold of your upper lids causing drooping upper eyelids.
  • Loose skin that hangs off your upper eyelids (sometimes impairing vision).
  • Puffy or droopy lower eyelids, bags, and dark circles underneath your eyes can be eliminated with lower eyelid surgery.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

Many patients seek surgery because upper eyelid heaviness makes them look tired or angry, or because loose skin affects their upper lid function or side vision. Candidates should be in good health, with no significant eye disease, circulatory disorders, or medical conditions that could impact healing. Prior to blepharoplasty surgery, patients may be asked to stop blood thinners, herbal supplements, and smoking to minimize bruising and swelling.

Types of Blepharoplasty Surgery

Both forms of blepharoplasty surgery may be combined for comprehensive rejuvenation. Dr. Prysi will determine the best surgical techniques based on your goals and anatomy:

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) focuses on the upper eyelids, where age-related changes often cause skin to stretch and fat to bulge. During this surgical technique, Dr. Prysi makes an incision along the natural crease of the upper lid, removes excess skin and fat, and refines the lid’s shape. This type of surgery can also help improve vision by eliminating droopy folds that block the eyelid margin or visual field.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery (lower eyelid blepharoplasty) targets puffiness, loose skin, and dark circles affecting the lower eyelids. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, the surgeon may use a traditional external incision just beneath the lash line or a transconjunctival incision inside the lower eyelid when no skin removal is needed. This approach allows the surgeon to reposition fat, tighten tissue, and smooth the transition between the lower lid and cheek.

Before Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

During the initial consultation, it will be very important to discuss your aesthetic goals. Dr. Prysi will evaluate you for eyelid surgery and explain what the blepharoplasty procedure could do for you. Once he knows your goals, he may recommend additional procedures to improve the result. For best results, be prepared to discuss your complete medical history. This will include information about any previous surgeries, medical conditions, allergies, and medications. This is important for the purpose of preventing complications and ensuring the best possible outcome. It is a great idea to bring photos of yourself at an earlier age; they may serve as a good point of reference for creating the look of a younger you.

During Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours. Dr. Prysi will ensure that you are given anesthesia to prevent any pain or discomfort during surgery. If he is performing upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty), he makes an incision in the natural fold of your upper eyelid. Through the incision, he removes excess fat and repositions fat deposits. Any excess skin is removed. Finally, Dr. Prysi closes the incisions with sutures.

During lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty surgery), Dr. Prysi makes an incision just below the lash line. Then, he removes excess skin, muscle, and fat, or redistributes fat to treat puffy bags or bulges. Dr. Prysi makes the incision inside your lower eyelid, but this technique cannot be used to remove excess skin. When he is finished with his surgical alterations, Dr. Prysi closes the incisions with sutures.

After Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Your eyelids may feel swollen, bruised, or mildly irritated after surgery, but Dr. Prysi will give you comprehensive instructions for follow-up care. He will instruct you on how to take care of your eyes and advise which medications to apply to the area or take orally during your recovery.

For the most comfortable blepharoplasty recovery, you can do the following things:

  • Keep ice packs or other cool compresses available for reducing swelling and pain.
  • Clean washcloths and towels to keep the surgical area clean.
  • Use over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen but avoid medicines such as Advil, Motrin, naproxen, Aleve, and aspirin because they increase your risk of bleeding.
  • Limit activities for the recommended period.

After surgery, Dr. Prysi will meet with you periodically in his Naples, FL office to ensure it is healing correctly.  If you have questions at any time during the healing process, Dr. Prysi is only a phone call away.

What Can Be Combined with Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery blends seamlessly with many other facial surgery procedures to create balanced, natural results. Because aging rarely affects only the eyelids, combining treatments can enhance overall facial harmony. These combination procedures may be performed in the same session at an outpatient surgery center, reducing total recovery time and maximizing aesthetic results.

Eyelid Lift Surgery and Brow Lift

In many patients, sagging brows contribute to the appearance of drooping eyelids or heavy upper eyelids. When the brow sits too low, it pushes the upper lid downward, creating more excess skin than blepharoplasty alone can correct. Combining an eyelid lift with a brow lift restores proper brow position while also allowing the surgeon to remove excess eyelid skin safely and naturally.

Eyelid Surgery and Endoscopic Composite Facelift

A combined eyelid lift and endoscopic composite facelift offers full midface and lower-face rejuvenation, addressing multiple signs of aging simultaneously. While eyelid surgery focuses on the upper lids, lower lids, and periorbital region, the composite facelift elevates deeper facial structures, tightens tissues, and restores youthful cheek volume.
